No aniversáro de primeiro ano da morte de Lou Reed, seu velho parceiro John Cale sente a dor da perda na bela “If You Were Still Around”, lançada com um clipe que mistura imagens de Lou com de outros amigos daquele círculo que já se foram – o guitarrista do Velvet Underground Sterling Morrison, a cantora Nico, o papa Andy Warhol e a modelo Edie Sedgwick. A faixa foi lançada com uma declaração que resume a relação espinhosa entre Lou e John, que brigaram e voltaram a se conversar por várias vezes em suas vidas:

“A Moth and a Candle met. They decided to become friends. Everyone enjoyed watching their discourse – especially the risk takers. Then one day a big rain came. The Moth couldn’t fly and the Candle puttered out. Everyone laughed in bitter awe and blamed the rain. Most however knew the deeper truth – the Candle remains lit and the Moth will stay close.”

Que tal começar a semana ouvindo uma música inédita do Velvet Underground, gravada ainda na fase clássica do grupo, com John Cale na formação? “I’m Not A Young Man Anymore” foi gravada ao vivo no Gymnasium, em Nova York, no dia 30 de abril de 1967, e só havia aparecido em um disco pirata. Mas a versão abaixo, pinçada pelo Dangerous Minds a partir do material da edição tripla do White Light/White Heat que chega às lojas este mês, veio direto da coleção do próprio John Cale, que participou da reedição do disco tão bem como Lou Reed, pouco antes de morrer. Falando sobre a morte de Lou Reed à revista Rolling Stone, nosso amigo sonic youth Thurston Moore comentou sobre a canção que finalmente será lançada oficialmente:

“I was at South by Southwest in 2008, playing at a Lou Reed appreciation concert. I’d just heard “I’m Not a Young Man Anymore,” which had just surfaced on a Velvet Underground bootleg. It was this powerful song I’d never heard before. Before we went on, I was talking to Lou and told him about it and he said, “How the hell do you know about that song?” I said, “It just surfaced on a bootleg on the Internet.” I said I thought it would be a good song to play since I just turned 50. And when I said that, he looked at me, half smiled and embraced me. It was wonderful and completely unexpected.”

Houve um momento em que John Cale, Nick Cave e Chrissie Hynde dividiram o mesmo palco para cantar e falar sobre suas próprias canções. Isso aconteceu no dia 7 de setembro de 1999, quando a BBC reuniu os três no programa Song Writers Cycle, que nos presenteou com esta versão para “I’m Waiting for the Man”.

A versão para a música do Velvet Underground foi o final do programa, que vale ser visto na íntegra, com cada um dos três escolhendo determinadas músicas e comentando-as. Infelizmente só consegui achar “Kid” das músicas de Chryssie Hynde (nada de “I’ll Stand By You” ou “Back on the Chain Gang”) no YouTube – já as outras de Cale e Cave seguem abaixo:
