Entre as diversas fases clássicas de Bob Dylan, sua volta aos palcos em 1974 está entre um dos momentos mais intensos de sua carreira e esse registro volta em formato pleno quando o mestre anunciou mais um projeto para envernizar ainda mais seu legado: a caixa The 1974 Live Recordings reúne nada mais nada menos que 431 diferentes versões de suas canções espalhadas por 27 CDs, 417 delas nunca ouvidas pelo grande público, e será lançada no próximo dia 20 de setembro. Desde que sofreu um acidente de moto em 1966, Dylan distanciou-se dos palcos e passou a fazer esparsas apresentações ao vivo ou aparições em programas de rádio ou TV enquanto lançava discos que aumentavam ainda mais sua importância ao mesmo tempo em que desafiavam as expectativas dos fãs.

O misterioso acidente do dia 29 de junho – que na época especulava-se sobre um atentado feito pelo FBI que poderia até mesmo ter tirado sua vida – nunca foi propriamente esclarecido, ninguém sabe se ele sofreu apenas ferimentos leves, se havia realmente se machucado ou se o acidente realmente aconteceu, mas veio num momento providencial para a carreira do artista, que vinha atraindo a ira dos antigos fãs enfurecidos por sua traição ao folk ao abraçar instrumentos elétricos ao lado de uma banda de rock, os canadenses Hawks, que agora se chamavam de The Band. A turnê que realizou na Europa no mês anterior deixou o grupo abalado por seus shows terem sido recebidos com agressividade e a nova popularidade de Dylan, não mais o grande nome do folk e agora um astro do rock, havia o colocado em um ritmo de trabalho que lhe exigia demais, principalmente em relação à sua presença. Fora da arena pública pode fazer discos sem a cobrança de colocá-los em turnê e quando sentiu-se à vontade para voltar à estrada, chamou a mesma The Band – agora um grupo estabelecido, com vários discos lançados – para atravessar as 30 apresentações em 42 dias (muitas vezes tocando dois shows no mesmo dia) naquilo que o crítico musical Robert Christgau descreveu como se o autor “atropelasse suas velhas músicas com um caminhão”, tamanha carga de energia em todas as noites. E além de revisitar vários clássicos de sua carreira, apresentou versões ao vivo pela primeira vez para faixas que gravou no período recluso dos palcos, como “All Along The Watchtower”, “Forever Young” “Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)”, que quase sempre abria ou fechava os shows, Dylan também tocou músicas de sua carreira pregressa que quase nunca tinha tocado ao vivo, como “Hero Blues”, “Ballad Of Hollis Brown” e “Song to Woody”. A turnê gerou o disco ao vivo Before The Flood, que trazia na capa uma das invenções de Dylan nesta turnê, quando todo o público levantava isqueiros acesos, transformando a plateia num céu estrelado.

As músicas do duplo ao vivo são as únicas já ouvidas desta turnê, agora inteiramente reunida nessa ousada caixa de discos, que também terá uma versão compacta em três LPs lançada pela gravadora de Jack White, Third Man Records. As duas versões já estão em pré-venda e uma das versões para “Forever Young” (esta gravada no show da tarde do dia 9 de fevereiro, em Seattle) foi lançada para antecipar a novidade – ouça abaixo, além de ver a maravilha que é esse novo box set (que ainda vem com um encarte com texto escrito plea jornalista Elizabeth Nelson) e todas as faixas de cada um dos 27 discos:
