Morrissey x Ramones
E por falar em Morrissey, vale citar a carta que o jovem autor, na época com 17 anos, enviou para o Melody Maker em 1976 desancando um hype de Nova York que começava a ser comprado pela imprensa londrina. Ela foi desenterrada pelo Dangerous Minds e a tradução foi feita pelo blog Tenho Mais Discos Que Amigos (dica dum certo XyZ, valeu):
Os Ramones são a mais recente banda de presunçosos degenerados e sem talento cuja realização mais notável até hoje é a habilidade de passar das fronteiras de Nova York, e puramente pela força de uma enxurrada de textos convincentes que projetam os Ramones como um presente de Deus ao rock.
Eles foram recebidos pela bajulação instantânea de um exército de fãs enganados. Musicalmente, eles não lidam com detalhes ou variações de nenhum tipo, a regra da banda é ser tão incompetente quanto o possível.
Para uma banda que diz projetar a juventude da América, a vida suburbana de Nova York, anti-conformismo, sexo e lutas, ou seja lá o que for, eles falham miseravelmente. E na luz sóbria do dia, suas imperfeições têm uma chance.
Os Ramones fazem o Stooges soarem como mestres da música clássica e eu sinto que o único lugar para sua música contraditória é o centro rico de Manhattan com o qual eles, sem dúvidas, estão acostumados.
O New York Dolls e Patti Smith provaram que há alguma vida pulsando nos pântanos e entranhas de Nova York, e eles são os únicos grupos surgidos da cena underground de NY que merecem reconhecimento. Os Ramones não têm absolutamente nada a adicionar em relevância ou importância e deveriam ser esquecidos.

“The Ramones are the latest bumptious band of degenerate no-talents whose most notable achievement to date is their ability to advance beyond the boundaries of New York City, and purely on the strength of a spate of convincing literature projecting the Ramones as God’s gift to rock music.
They have been greeted with instant adulation by an army of duped fans. Musically, they do not deal in subtlety or variation of any kind, their rule is to be as incompetent as possible.
For a band believed to project the youth of America, New York – suburban life, anti-conformism, sex and struggle, or whatever, they fail miserably. And in the sober light of day their imperfections have a field day.
The Ramones make the Stooges sound like concertmasters, and I feel that the only place for their discordant music is the sweaty downtown Manhattan dives to which they are no doubt accustomed.
The New York Dolls and Patti Smith have proved that there is some life pumping away in the swamps and gutters of New York and they are the only acts which originated from the N.Y. club scene worthy of any praise. The Ramones have absolutely nothing to add that is of relevance or importance and should be rightly filed and forgotten—Steve Morrissey, Kings Road, Stretford, Manchester.”
