Enquanto Frank Ocean ganhou 2012 por expandir seu universo sonoro para além do hip hop, abraçando diferentes camadas da black music num disco ao mesmo tempo sensível e maduro, Kendrick Lamar aproveitou sua primeira incursão na primeira divisão da indústria fonográfica para transformar seu Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City no grande disco de rap do ano. Ao mesmo tempo em que resolve contar seus dramas da juventude (o título do álbum se refere à sua chegada em Compton, berço do gangsta rap no sul de Los Angeles, além de conter uma sigla para “my angry adolescence divided”), resolve assumir sua maturidade, tanto nos beats mais sossegados quanto no flow manhoso, quase falado. E o grande momento do disco é sem dúvida a irresistível “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”, tão californiana quanto Dr. Dre e 2Pac Shakur, mas transformando a arrogância em desprezo, atitude resumida numa frase inusitada em uma música de hip hop: “Às vezes preciso ficar só”.
