Esta versão psicodélica de Alice foi dirigida por Johnatan Miller, um dos caras do show de humor Beyond the Fringe, que convidou outros compadres do show – como o Peter Cook que faz o Chapeleiro Maluco e o Alan Bennett que faz o Rato no esquete acima – para formar o elenco da versão feita para o programa Wednesday’s Play, da BBC. A versão ainda contava com Peter Sellers como o Rei de Copas, Wilfrid Brambell (o “avô” do Paul no primeiro filme dos Beatles) como o Coelho Branco e trilha sonora de Ravi Shankar, criando, ainda em 1966 e através de canais estatais, o rumo que foi descambar na psicodelia do ano seguinte.

Gostou, né? E que tal esse disco com todas as gravações do trio do Cobain na BBC? Você conhece provavelmente boa parte dessas gravações: as versões de “Molly’s Lips”, “D7”, “Turnaround”, “Son of a Gun” (gravadas na segunda participação da banda no show de John Peel, no dia 21 de outubro de 1990), “Aneurysm”, “Been a Son” e “Polly” (estas gravadas no Evening Session de Mark Goodier no dia 9 de novembro de 1991) formam a grande parte do Incesticide, o disco de sobras que a banda lançou entre o Nevermind e o In Utero. Além destas, duas outras (“Dumb” e “Endless Nameless”) gravadas no dia 3 de setembro de 1991 em outro programa do John Peel também apareceram na caixa With the Lights Out. Das gravações não-oficializadas ainda restaa íntegra da primeira participação da banda no programa de Peel, dia 26 de outubro de 1989 (“Love Buzz”, “Spank Thru”, “About a Girl” e “Polly” ainda com o baterista Chad Channing) e duas versões alternativas para “Something in the Way” e “Drain You”. As BBC Sessions do Nirvana são um capítulo clássico na história da banda – os três pegando seu melhor público na veia, no auge, em versões perfeitas de músicas menores do repertório de Kurt.

O programa Essential Mix, da BBC, já pode ser considerada uma das principais instituições da dance music mundial. No ar desde 1993, o programa convida DJs e produtores a discotecar por duas horas sem parar e quase todo mundo que é alguém na pista de dança já bateu ponto no programa. O legal é que agora apareceu este site Essential Mixes, aparentemente sem nenhum vínculo oficial com o programa da BBC, que não apenas permite que você faça download de vários destes sets, como os organiza de forma bem detalhada, com as faixas de todos os programas e permite até ranquear os sets dos DJs. Apesar de não chegar nem perto do número original de programas, a oferta já é bem farta – só de set do Pete Tong, dá pra deixar rolar quase um dia inteiro, e tem vários outros desses DJs sem vocal que vêm ao D-Edge ou ao Skol Beats ano sim, ano não. Por outro lado, recomendo baixar qualquer coisa do David Holmes e os sets do Fatboy Slim, mas também tem coisas do Soulwax, Air, Kraftwerk, Chemical Brothers, Dimitri From Paris, Daft Punk, DJ Yoda, Audio Bullys, Plump DJs, Krafty Kutz… Muita coisa fina.

O Franz se alinha ao grupo de artistas que reverencia o hit da Britney ano passado, mas sem muita inspiração – chamando “Womanizer” de “a melhor música nos últimos meses”, o grupo escocês regravou a faixa ao vivo numa apresentação hoje na BBC (a íntegra do show pode ser ouvida aqui). Sua versão e fica a poucos centímetros acima da feita pelo All American Rejects, passando a milhas de distância das boas – pero óbvias – recriações de Ladyhawke e Lily Allen.
