Poetry is for everyone
“Cut-ups are for everyone. Anybody can make cut-ups. It is experimental in the sense of being something to do. Right here write now. Not something to talk and argue about. Greek philoso- phers assumed logically that an object twice as heavy as another object would fall twice as fast. It did not occur to them to push the two objects off the table and see how they fall. Cut the words and see how they fall. Shakespeare Rimbaud live in their words. Cut the word lines and you will hear their voices. Cut-ups often come through as code messages with special meaning for the cutter. Table tapping? Perhaps. Certainly an improvement on the usual deplorable performance of contacted poets through a medium. Rimbaud announces himself, to be followed by some excruciatingly bad poetry. Cut Rimbaud’s words and you are as- sured of good poetry at least if not personal appearance. All writing is in fact cut-ups. A collage of words read heard overheard. What else? Use of scissors renders the process explicit and subject to extension and variation. Clear classical prose can be composed entirely of rearranged cut-ups. Cutting and rear- ranging a page of written words introduces a new dimension into writing enabling the writer to turn images in cinematic variation. Images shift sense under the scissors smell images to sound sight to sound sound to kinesthetic. This is where Rimbaud was going with his color of vowels. And his “systematic derangement of the senses.” The place of mescaline hallucination: seeing colors tasting sounds smelling forms. The cut-ups can be applied to other fields than writing. Dr Neumann in his Theory of Games and Economic Behavior intro- duces the cut-up method of random action into game and military strategy: assume that the worst has happened and act accordingly. If your strategy is at some point determined . . . by random factor your opponent will gain no advantage from knowing your strategy since he cannot predict the move. The cut-up method could be used to advantage in processing scientific data. How many dis- coveries have been made by accident? We cannot produce ac- cidents to order. The cut-ups could add new dimension to films. Cut gambling scene in with a thousand gambling scenes all times and places. Cut back. Cut streets of the world. Cut and rearrange the word and image in films. There is no reason to accept a second-rate product when you can have the best. And the best is there for all. “Poetry is for everyone” . . . ”

É, claro, a cannabis. Erva.

“Queda livre, no momento evolucionário correto, aciona a mutação neurossomática, crê Leary.

Workers of the world, relax!
Leisure is the new currency and your credit has no limit. Relaxation, in its purest form, is an essential component of human creativity. It is the yin to society’s infoglut yang. Wake to the dawning of the age of leisure! Machines have made the need to work obsolete. To continue on is folly. Grab a chair, sit back, and claim what is rightfully yours. Leisure. There is no substitute. You have nothing to lose but your slavery to the opiate of busyness – and the world of leisure to gain!

The Heart of Darkness – Joseph Conrad
“I came upon him, and, if he had not heard me coming, I would have fallen over him too, but he got up in time. He rose, unsteady, long, pale, indistinct, like a vapor exhaled by the earth, and swayed slightly, misty and silent before me; while at my back the fires loomed between the trees, and the murmur of many voices issued from the forest. I had cut him off cleverly; but when actually confronting him I seemed to come to my senses, I saw the danger in its right proportion. It was by no means over yet. Suppose he began to shout? Though he could hardly stand, there was still plenty of vigor in his voice. `Go away– hide yourself,’ he said, in that profound tone. It was very awful. I glanced back. We were within thirty yards from the nearest fire. A black figure stood up, strode on long black legs, waving long black arms, across the glow. It had horns–antelope horns, I think– on its head. Some sorcerer, some witch-man, no doubt: it looked fiend-like enough. `Do you know what you are doing?’ I whispered. `Perfectly,’ he answered, raising his voice for that single word: it sounded to me far off and yet loud, like a hail through a speaking-trumpet. `If he makes a row we are lost,’ I thought to myself. This clearly was not a case for fisticuffs, even apart from the very natural aversion I had to beat that Shadow–this wandering and tormented thing. `You will be lost,’ I said–‘utterly lost.’ One gets sometimes such a flash of inspiration, you know. I did say the right thing, though indeed he could not have been more irretrievably lost than he was at this very moment, when the foundations of our intimacy were being laid–to endure– to endure–even to the end–even beyond.

Dr. Livingstone, I prosume
We are not currently in Toffler’s third wave; we are still in transition between the second and third waves, and that is why the implications of the transformation are not immediately obvious.

Just as knowledge is replacing material and manpower as the fulcrum of the new economy, the old roles of producer and consumer are blurring. In the case of Windows 95, which anyone with a disk drive can duplicate as well as GM made Cadillacs, those roles have lost much meaning. The Tofflers have come up with a word that describes the blurred role we all play: prosumer.

As prosumers we have a new set of responsibilities, to educate ourselves. We are no longer a passive market upon which industry dumps consumer goods but a part of the process, pulling toward us the information and services that we design from our own imagination.

It is a version of capitalism that colonial economics (“There’s a sucker born every minute”) never envisaged. In the third wave, the prosumer is always right.
